Pastor Lucas

For those of you who are interested, I corrected the link on the right-hand sidebar to Pastor Lucas' page. From what my parents told me a couple of weeks ago it sounds like he will be returning to the States soon. While in Iraq he lost his parish so what he will be doing when he returns is kinda up in the air right now.

Pastor Lucas, if you read this, I know it's been a tough time while being away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for serving both God and country as a chaplain for our soldiers and all the others you came in contact there.

I am serving as task force chaplain for a brigade sized operation in New Orleans. I am supporting soldiers who are assisting with security. The mission is scheduled to last until late in February, though it could end sooner or be extended as the need dictates.

The devastation in the infamous 9th Ward is astonishing! Near the two main breaches in the levy, houses for two city blocks are gone! One sees concrete slabs and the trees that were in the yard. Other homes rest up against the neighbor's home behind them, or are piled on top.

Water mark lines are everywhere, showing water generally was from two to eight feet deep in most of the flooded places. There are thousands of cars abandoned, some that were completely submerged, others half submerged. I live in the Nortre Dame Seminary, and the water filled the basement and rose up about three feet around it. They just got the boilers working again today, so we finally get hot showers.

The bulk of the soldiers live in the convention center. There will be a couple thousand, mostly from Louisiana. The convention center is so big, almost a quaarter of a mile long, that soldiers lived in it for a couple weeks before they discovered dead bodies down on one end that is idle for now! I am hoping that there will be at least two other chaplains. As it stands, I am the only one so far.

Thanks for your prayers. Good to hear from you. My Daniel is in Baghdad!

Hey, it's great to hear from you again, Pastor Lucas. Thanks for your service both in Iraq and now in New Orleans. So your Daniel is now serving in Iraq? Wow, that must mean he has changed quite a bit since the last news I had heard about him.
